The show was hosted by Kate Thornton and originally the three judges Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh. Each judge is responsible for a different section of the singers on the show. The judges did not know what part of the competition will take up the audition process is over. Each judge has to pick four acts to bring up the live stream of the show. Each week, the two acts with the fewest votes from the public have to sing again in a final showdown after the judges decide who should be eliminated. Once there are only five events remaining on the left becomes the left to the public decide who should go. One series was won by Steve Brookstein, while the two series was won by Shayne Ward. The third set was won by Leona Lewis making her the first woman to win the show. The three of them went on to have number one hits on the registration lists in the UK. When the program returned in 2007 for a fourth series Dermot O'Leary replaced Kate Thornton as host. Dannii Minogue joined the series as a fourth judge and Leon Jackson was crowned the winner of the series. The series returned in 2008 for a fifth series with Cheryl Cole replacing Sharon Osbourne on the judging panel. The series was won by Alexandra Burke. The sixth series in 2009 was won by Joe McElderry. The series will return in 2010 for a seventh series.
